DTP - BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF ASIA-PACIFIC HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENTS 1990 - 2022

Welcome to this issue of DTP’s eNews. We continue our profile of DTP’s trainers who generously share their knowledge and expertise as their pro bono contribution to our work and the work of human rights defenders in the region. In this issue we profile Amy Sinclair, who also links our participants to the important and valuable work of the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre. We also profile alumnus James Meimana of the Solomon Islands – one of those who is working on the ground to save the forests and seas of the Pacific. Lots of other news and updates – we hope it is of interest and use to you.

DTP TRAINER PROFILE: AMY SINCLAIR

Amy is a lawyer with over two decades’ experience in law and human rights. As the Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Regional Representative for BHRRC, she has helped drive the Business and Human Rights Agenda in the region – including through the adoption of the Modern Slavery Act in Australia.

"Hearing directly from community advocates about their experiences on the ground, and working with them to develop a pathway forwards, is one of the most valuable aspects of our involvement in the Pacific BHR trainings with DTP."

DTP ALUMNI PROFILE: JAMES MEIMANA

James Meimana works with the Network for Indigenous People in the Solomons (NIPS) as a Project Manager. He is also employed as a Senior Compliance Officer at the Ministry of Fisheries for the Solomon Islands. He is currently working on several projects, including preparing a community-based protocol for food security and gender rights, exchanging knowledge between the mining companies and the local communities, land stewardship and, food security and climate change.  

"I have been attending training from other organizations, but I cannot remember coming across another effective training such as DTP, I made new friends from PNG, West Papua, Fiji, Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Indonesia. We stayed in the same hotel, we exchanged information, we had some fun together."

BANGLADESH

Anisur Rahman Khan expressed Awaj Foundation’s appreciation of help from Malaysian CSOs and others in successfully in repatriating Mr. Ataur Rahman, a Bangladeshi migrant worker who had been imprisoned in a Malaysian jail. Thanks to this example of transnational/migrant corridor advocacy a son was able to return to his family. Undocumented and detained migrant workers in Malaysia are at heightened risk of human rights abuses. Awaj works on these cases and for systemic change.
