Irene works in the Research and Information Dissemination Program team at Jaringan Orang Asal Semalaysia (JOAS). Her duties including helping the Program Coordinator in conducting research on the issues and concerns of Indigenous people of Malaysia; and developing and executing information dissemination strategies for JOAS’ network of 80 community-based organisations. JOAS is currently implementing a project focusing on “Reducing the Impact of the Dutch Economy on Indigenous Peoples,” as part of this project; Irene conducts conflict resolution activities in cases in Borneo where palm oil production linked to Dutch financiers, investors and companies, has significantly impacted local livelihoods and ecosystems. Consequently, with particular interest in gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms used to advocate for human rights and the use of the media; by participating in this program, Irene is eager to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for the rights of indigenous people when conducting this project.
