Nauru Island Association of NGOs
Nauru
As the secretariat to the board of Nauru Island Association of Non-Government Organisations (NIANGO) Julies plays a coordinating role within NIANGO on programs such as the Constitutional literacy workshop. The workshop concentrated on the Bill of Rights and participants produced a collective submission to the constitutional review committee about the “right to information”. NIANGO is now working with member NGO’s on this issue to produce draft legislation on the ‘right to information’. As coordinator Julie is a representative of NIANGO at EPA (Trade) meeting held in Nauru organised by foreign affairs. “Trade is an area in which we do not feel so confident to participate, essentially because Nauruan civil society has never been encouraged to participate in such matters.” Nauru’s one trade commodity is phosphate, however today phosphate sales have diminished, this has negatively impacted the countries balance of trade, commodity prices have rocketed, salaries have dropped and so has the standard of living. Julie sees the results of this trade imbalance as being the biggest issue relating to poverty in Nauru.
