Kanitha Long

Legal Assistant, Community Legal Education Center (CLEC)
Cambodia
Kanitha works as a Legal Assistant for Land and Natural Resources Unit at the Community Legal Education Center based in Phnom Penh. The primary objective of the unit is to defend high profile land cases; working particularly on urban, rural issues and Indigenous forced evictions. Kanitha works with lawyers concerning specific land cases; by researching issues and reviewing existing law and regulations. She also works closely with Indigenous communities in the Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri provinces; and local and international organisations in order to find ways to approach the government or private sector concerning their land cases. Kanitha believes the training program will help improve her understanding of regional and international standards protecting indigenous people. Further, from the experiences of trainers and participants from different countries, she hopes to learn of different advocacy techniques used to protect indigenous peoples’ livelihoods. She is thus eager to learn of different concepts and strategies used in order to implement in her work and also in order to shape, or improve approaches used in Cambodia.
