Karim Bux Mangi

Karim currently works as Program Officer for the non-governmental organisation Step to Social Change. Established in 2002, SSC is currently based in five districts of northern Sindh. Through advocacy, capacity-building, and research and community development initiatives, SSC strives toward socio-economic justice for disadvantaged groups in Pakistan. As Program Officer for SSC, Karim’s responsibilities include facilitating the formation of community organisations, organising seminars and workshops concerning human and legal rights, and implementing participatory monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of such initiatives. As his work concerns raising awareness among local communities of their fundamental rights, participating in this program will help Karim gain a greater understanding of international standards such as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Karim hopes to use such knowledge to more effectively address issues impacting marginalised communities in Pakistan, including self-determination, control of resources and the pressures of traditional feudal and tribal systems.
