Linda Sudiono

Coordinator, Serikat Pembebasan Perempuan (SIEMPRE)
Indonesia
Linda’s role involves building networks and spaces for women to gain awareness surrounding gender discrimination, gender oppression, and provide opportunities for women to contribute directly in the policy-making processes. SIEMPRE is the first women’s organization in Indonesia to support self-determination policies for women in West Papua. They also actively advocate against violence towards Papuan women. Linda and her organisation are currently assisting residents of the Sukoharjo district in Central Java, who have been affected by the textile company PT. Rayon Utama Makmur (PT RUM), who have allegedly violated environmental permits to produce zero carbon disulphides. Linda and her team conduct advocacy, public hearings and training for the indigenous residents, who have become victims. However, the organisation is facing a deadlock due to public complaints and specific resolution cannot be fixed. PT RUM is legally registered in Indonesia, which is not a member of the OECD, and so the OECD Guidelines may not be applicable in this case. Linda hopes to gain further education surrounding international complaints and redress mechanisms, as well as other knowledge for maximizing advocacy for the Indigenous residents.
