2022 Capacity Building Program on the UN Human Rights Special Procedures

Online Program

2023

This program has been postponed and will take place in 2023.

This new program will build the capacity of community advocates and human rights defenders in the Pacific and Asia to engage effectively with a key UN human rights accountability mechanism – the UN Human Rights Special Procedures (SPs).

The program will bring together 20-25 participants working on specific human rights issues and cases and enable them to make submissions seeking action from relevant UN Human Rights SPs as part of their advocacy strategies to defend, protect and promote human rights.

The program will be developed and delivered through a number of online sessions organised and facilitated by the Diplomacy Training Program (DTP) and its partners Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Regional Office for the Pacific and offline advice from Australian Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR).

  • Program content will include:
  • Human rights standards and mechanisms;
  • Understanding UN Human Rights SPs;
  • Navigation of the OHCHR website;
  • Drafting of submissions;
  • Tips and advice on engaging effectively with the UN Human Rights SPs.

The program is aimed at HRDs from Asia Pacific countries who are working with organisations and advocating for a specific case or issue that could be the basis for a submission. Consideration will be given to ensuring a gender balance and other diversities amongst selected participants.
