In our continuing focus on Digital Rights and human rights, we provide a link to an article by Dr Rys Farthing, Director of Children’s Policy at Reset (Australia), “Prohibiting targeting to children and children’s best interests: Can the two coexist?”. In this article Dr Farthing, a speaker at the recent DTP webinar on digital rights and children’s rights, makes a number of recommendations warning “that consent alone is not adequate for determining best interests (of the child), nor are broad declarations about not causing evidenced harm”. In this issue, we profile DTP alumnus and PNG environmental human rights defender Emmanuel Peni, and his efforts to save the Sepik River, its peoples and cultures from a proposed mine and tailings dam on the Frieda River. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, HUMAN RIGHTS AND BUSINESS

in partnership with Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), Chiang Mai, Thailand, 9-13 June. A regional capacity building program for Indigenous Peoples advocates. With 23 participants from 7 countries, and six DTP alumni returning as trainers. AIPP Secretary General led the session on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Self-Determination. There was a focus on the OECD Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct with Serena Lillywhite AM.

HUMAN RIGHTS, CLIMATE CHANGE AND BUSINESS IN THE PACIFIC

Fiji’s Assistant Foreign Minister Madam Lenora Qereqeretabua and OHCHR’s Regional Representative Heike Alefsen opened DTP’s program held in partnership with PIANGO, Fiji Council of Social Services and OHCHR-PRO. 25 Pacific human rights and climate change advocates gathered together from 23-27 June in Suva for the new program focusing on Human Rights, Climate Change and Business in the Pacific.

DTP joined advocates, thought leaders and community members for a day's symposium marking IDERD and the 50th anniversary of the Racial Discrimination Act to explore the ongoing fight to eradicate racism. DTP 2024 Annual Report

DTP's 2024 Annual Report is now available. In 2024, working with alumni and partners, DTP delivered an impressive range of face-to-face and online programs. Its 14 programs held in 6 countries included 269 participants (about 50% women) from 23 countries. The Annual Report details its activity throughout the year and highlights the stories of some of its alumni and trainers and the human rights issues they work on.

Emmanuel Peni

Emmanuel (Manu) Peni is a human rights defender, environmental justice activist, and the Executive Director of Project Sepik, a community-led organisation working to save the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea (PNG) from the proposed Frieda River Mine – which threatens catastrophic environmental and social impacts.

"In the end, DTP was not just a training program; it was a catalyst that rekindled my spirit and reaffirmed my belief that together, we are stronger."

The news of the government revoking four nickel mining license on environmental grounds is no cause for complacency according to DTP alumnus Imam Shofwan as one license was granted, and other licenses have been reinstated in the past.
