DTP - BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF ASIA-PACIFIC HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENTS 1990 - 2023

We are continuing with a series of contributions on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 30th of the Vienna Declaration. In this issue we reproduce a think piece by John Pace, “The Evolution of the International Architecture for the Protection of Human Rights since Vienna”. His purpose “is to underline the ever-widening gap between rhetoric in the meeting room and reality on the ground, which Vienna attempted to address”. John was the Secretary of the Conference, and was until recently on the Board of DTP. READ MORE

Alumni have shared about the escalation of violence in Manipur India as well as the fallout from the devastation wrecked by Cyclone Mocha through Myanmar. In this issue we share statements by DTP partners FORUM-ASIA and AIPP and the UN on the situations. We also include a profile on alumna Nayela Akter, and news from alumni, partners, the region and the UN.

DTP PROGRAMS

DTP ALUMNI WORKSHOPS: ASIA AND PACIFIC: DTP will be holding two alumni workshops - in Bangkok and in Fiji to reflect on DTP's programs and strategise future program priorities and direction, and strengthening of DTP networks. MYANMAR NUG HUMAN RIGHTS MINISTER’S VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

Last week DTP’s Executive Director Patrick Earle met with the NUG's Human Rights Minister (and former DTP trainer/partner) U Aung Myo Min at the NUG Embassy in Canberra. They discussed the need for capacity building programs for Myanmar’s human rights defenders and democracy movement as the NUG builds support internationally for peace and democracy.

Aung Myo Min will speak at the “Is Peace and Democracy Possible in Myanmar?” and will be awarded the Sydney Peace Foundation Gold Medal for Human Rights on 2 June.

ALUMNI PROFILE: NAYELA AKTER

Nayela participated in the DTP/MFA migrant worker program in Bangladesh in 2015/16. She now works with the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF) managing their EU funded Inter-Governmental Mechanism (IGM) project.

"I remember the DTP training vividly. The training was a continuous initiative with some effective results. DTP training brought all the migrant rights NGOs in Bangladesh together to formulate a coherent national advocacy agenda for migrant workers' rights."

PAKISTAN

Waheed Ahmad leads the Child Protection Committee of Lahore Bar Association and coorganised a workshop in Islamabad on child rights, identifying gaps in the implementation of the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018. The workshop recommended:

  • The court must order a scientific/medical age determination procedure for any arrested child.
  • Provide a separate criminal justice system to those under eighteen in conflict with the law
  • Arrested child should not be mixed with adult prisoners or convicts
  • No child in the custody of police should be handcuffed
  • Government must establish observation homes and juvenile Rehabilitation Centers for under eighteen detainees.
  • Free legal aid (at the State’s Expense) to minors in conflict with the law.
  • Establishment of Observation homes and rehabilitation centers.
