DTP - BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF ASIA-PACIFIC HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENTS 1990 - 2023

We are continuing with a series of contributions on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 30th of the Vienna Declaration. In this issue we provide a link to a video on the UDHR, its history, its content, and on the women and men in the community who are crucial to the realisation of the human rights enshrined therein VIEW THE VIDEO

In this issue, we include a profile on alumnus Bashar Hanna, report on the visit to DTP by alumnus Dickson Ntwiga, and news from alumni, partners, the region and the UN.

DTP PROGRAMS

DTP ALUMNI WORKSHOPS: ASIA: DTP begins its Asian alumni workshop today in Bangkok to reflect on DTP's programs and strategise future program priorities and direction, and strengthening of DTP networks. 32 alumni and partners from 10 countries will be participating. A full report will follow.

IMPLEMENTING THE RIGHT TO FREE PRIOR INFORMED CONSENT: In partnership with Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact. The final two online modules of this special online program for EU representatives in Asia, Europe and Africa were completed on 13 and 14 June.

MYANMAR DIASPORA HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY IN ASEAN: The focus was on ASEAN’s responsibility to respond to the growing human rights crisis in Myanmar, and the role of ASEAN civil society advocacy in solidarity with the democracy movement in Myanmar. 31st ANNUAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEOPLES' DIPLOMACY TRAINING PROGRAM - TIMOR-LESTE: 21 August - 1 September. ALUMNI PROFILE: BASHAR HANNA

Bashar is a Sydney-based Arts and community cultural development specialist who works closely with culturally and linguistically diverse Middle Eastern communities in  the western suburbs of Sydney. After escaping the wars and discrimination in Iraq, Bashar utilises the transformative power of music, theatre, storytelling, poetry, and visual arts to create a positive social change.

"Lynda's session provided insights and practical techniques on how community leaders can effectively engage with politicians and inform their perspectives. That knowledge will be helpful for me to apply to my own work, recognizing its potential for making a significant impact."

ALUMNUS DICKSON NTWIGA VISITS DTP

Dickson Ntwiga stopped by the DTP offices during his recent first visit to Australia. Over lunch, Dickson updated the team on his work helping women migrant workers, breaking the cycle of violence against women and improving gender equality both at home in Kenya and abroad.

INDONESIA / WEST PAPUA

Agus Mahuze’s advocacy includes working with communities to preserve and promote local Indigenous cultures and languages, including through exhibitions and festivals. He shares some photos of rehearsals for next month’s cultural festival.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA / BOUGAINVILLE

Following the successful meeting of DTP Pacific Island alumni in Fiji, Ursula Rakova celebrated Bougainville day on her return home, planting new mangroves in the Carteret Islands – one of the places in the global spotlight for climate induced displacement.

INDONESIA / WEST PAPUA

Wensislaus Fatubun shares UNFPII reports of regional dialogues between Indigenous Peoples and Member States, and the report of the 22nd Session to ECOSOC both of which took account of the situation of Indigenous peoples of West Papua.

Alumni share report from an investigation by Forensic Architecture and Greenpeace Indonesia that 57,000 hectares of Papuan forests in Boven Digoel have been cleared by the Korindo Group since 2001.
