In this issue we continue with this year’s series focusing on climate change and human rights with a link to an item from UNDP, “Climate change is a matter of justice – here’s why” which details how climate changes impacts on vulnerable populations who have limited means to adapt to the effects of climate change. The article provides details of UNDP initiatives to address the issue, and argues that there has been progress in the struggle for climate justice. READ MORE

DTP Programs

UN PERMANENT FORUM ON INDIGENOUS ISSUES – Preparatory Program for Youth Delegates and Side-Event with AIPP. DTP and Oxfam Australia delivered a two-day online program 9-10 April to help prepare Australian youth delegates to the UNPFII, which begins this week. DTP is partnering with AIPP on a side-event at UNPFII - Towards actualization of self-determination of Indigenous Peoples in Asia as enshrined in UNDRIP; reflections on challenges and transformative pathways and the role of Indigenous youth, 19 April, 4:30pm CR5

BUILDING RESILIENCE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY MOVEMENTS - SHARING LESSONS AND BUILDING COLLABORATIONS IN CAPACITY BUILDING: 28-30 May (TBC). DTP and partners are calling for expressions of interest from DTP alumni interested in participating in a Workshop to reflect and share the lessons from capacity building on advocacy for human rights. The workshop aims to develop collaboration on human rights and democracy capacity building in response to the closing civil society spaces and rise in authoritarianism. 32nd ANNUAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEOPLES' DIPLOMACY TRAINING PROGRAM: Timor-Leste 12-23 August 2024 – at the invitation of President José Ramos-Horta and in partnership with Global Campus of Human Rights, Justice System Monitoring Project and Human Rights Centre, UNTL – AIPP, FORUM-ASIA, PIANGO and MFA. UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development, Professor Surya Deva has been confirmed as a trainer. Over 260 applications have been received and are currently being processed. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES RIGHTS - UNDRIP WEBINAR SERIES: DTP, in partnership with Oxfam Australia, is launching a new webinar series on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. DTP NETWORKING AND WEBINARS: To continue engaging and knowledge building with DTP alumni, DTP is planning a series of webinars on issues identified as important. Planning is underway for webinars on Deep Sea Mining, and on Human Rights, Digital Rights and Artificial Intelligence. Alumni Profile

Sumitha Shaanthinni Kishna

DTP alumna and trainer Sumitha Kishna is the Founding Director of Our Journey, a civil society organisation advocating for an internationally compliant migration system and migrant rights in Malaysia. She is also the Chairperson of Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA).
 
"After recognizing the importance of UPR process in DTP training, I proactively sought opportunities for engagement, requesting support from MFA to participate in these critical discussions. As a result, I gained valuable insights into the UN process, and enhanced my ability to advocate effectively for migrant workers’ rights."

INDONESIA / WEST PAPUA

DTP alumni continue to report indiscriminate shootings by the military that have killed and injured children as young as six. Rudi Kogoya shares video of protests against human rights violations by the Indonesian armed forces.

CAMBODIA

VANUATU

Jenny Ligo shared news of the Women Against Crime and Corruption (WACC) organising a human rights defenders consultation in Port Vila. The group called for creation of a human rights security and protection framework in Vanuatu.

INDONESIA / WEST PAPUA

John Sawaki shares Human Rights Monitor has published Annual Report 2023: Human Rights and Conflict in West Papua, showing a significantly worse human rights situation compared to the rest of Indonesia, with an escalation of unresolved conflict since December 2018, leading to a surge in extrajudicial killings, “disappearances”, and torture by security forces, particularly in the highlands. Freedom of expression remained restricted, with authorities continuing to disperse peaceful protests.
