Since 2005, Pornpen has been working as a human rights activist with the Cross-Cultural Foundation (CrCF). CrCF is a non-profit NGO that aims to promote understanding across different cultures, human rights and democracy. CrCF partners with many others including the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, Lawyer Council of Thailand, the Thai Volunteer Service for Human Rights, and Human Rights Lawyer Associations. CrCF also collaborates with UN OHCHR, UNVFTV, ICJ, Redress, Amnesty International, and Association for Prevention of Torture. Recently, Pornpen has been co-ordinating a project called ‘Access to Justice and Legal Protection’ which provides a voice to victims of abuse from Southern Thailand with the aim of bringing peace to this region. Alongside this, they have also been assisting Thai lawyers in cases for political refugees.
Since her participation in the 2008 DTP course, Pornpen has been involved in advocacy on key human rights issues in Thailand, including women’s rights, rights of Indigenous peoples, preventing torture and forced “disappearances”. She has been working courageously, despite threats, to promote the rule of law and respect for human rights in the conflict zones in the Deep South.
“I have been using the knowledge on UN mechanisms and taking a leadership role in submitting shadow reports to various UN Treaty Bodies; CRC 2011 CERD 2012, CAT 2013/2014, ESCR 2015 and ICCPR 2017 and the UPR in 2011 and the UPR 2nd round in 2016, and have submitted complaints to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.”
CrCF have also cooperated with UN OHCHR in organising and conducting training and workshops for Thai human rights organizations. At the beginning of June 2017, CrCF and other local civil society organisations submitted a shadow report to the CEDAW committee that will review Thailand in the 67th Session in Geneva in July 2017.
In addition to her advocacy work, Pornpen recently graduated from Thammasat University with a Law degree.
