Welcome to this issue of DTP’s eNewsletter. As Australia’s Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs spoke to Australia’s new Indigenous Diplomacy Agenda, DTP alumnus Binota Moy Dhamai highlights the struggles of Indigenous peoples, including the Mro in Bangladesh.

This eNews continues its focus on the human rights and democracy crisis in Myanmar, and responses to it. We also have a focus on Cambodia and the deteriorating human rights situation there - including attacks on freedom of speech and environmental human rights defenders.

As protests continue inside and outside the country against the recent military coup in Myanmar, DTP’s eNews continues its focus on human rights there. It also focuses on the rights of Indigenous peoples as the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues approaches its 20th Anniversary session.

As protests continue to demand democracy and human rights in Myanmar, despite the killing of at least 249 people and the detention of thousands, pressure builds for effective international action. In solidarity we continue our focus on Myanmar and also include calls for action and useful resources for human rights.

In this DTP e-News our focus on Myanmar continues in solidarity with the democracy and human rights movements there – recognising that more human rights defenders in more countries face growing restrictions and threats as highlighted by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights [PE3] in her Global Update to the Human Rights Council.

Welcome to this first issue of eNews for 2021. DTP continues to support those working for human rights in this challenging time of COVID. The values of human rights, the responsibilities they impose and the international cooperation and solidarity they call for are becoming ever more important.

This is our last issue for 2020, and has a special focus on the rights of migrant workers on this International Migrants Day.

Over the past two weeks, 25 participants from Asia and the Pacific have been participating in DTP's second online program, centred on Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights and Business.

This issue of DTP’s eNews highlights the work of DTP’s alumni and partners and others working to protect shared values of human rights and dignity across the region, often at great personal risk. Their work is critical to the functioning of the UN’s human rights mechanisms.

COVID-19 is intensifying focus on the actions, responsibilities and accountability of business. Since 2006, DTP has worked with partners to develop advocacy capacity on human rights and business and DTP’s first online programs, and this eNews, continue this focus.

Recognising International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August this issue focuses on actions and activities by Indigenous human rights defenders in addressing the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This issue of the eNews has a special focus on migrant workers. We highlight the efforts of human rights defenders who are speaking out on behalf of migrant workers, Indigenous peoples and communities facing discrimination and the abuse of their rights.

Everywhere human rights defenders and activists, UN human rights experts and governments are speaking out in support of universal values, the rule of law, human rights and multilateralism, and against the forces of repression and the denial of rights. This issue of the E-News links to some of these voices.

The pandemic highlights the need to defend the safety of human rights defenders, the voices of civil society, and to invest in these advocates of shared values and solidarity. DTP’s partners AIPP and Hawaii Institute/PIANGO are among those organising side events for voices from civil society to be heard.

Issue 103 of DTP’s E-News has a focus on Business and Human Rights with DTP alumni raising a range of concerns re business impacts on human rights. This will be the focus of a civil society event on June 8th.
