Indonesia
Sukarni is a community organizer at the Migrant Workers Family Community. The mission of this organisation is the protection of migrant workers and resolving of cases related to migrant worker issues. Sukarni’s role entails data collection, providing information, advocacy and economic empowerment. In past experiences, Sukarni has strived towards her organisation’s goals by conducting and attended various workshops. For example, in 2016 Sukarni collaborated with the Seruni Society and Center for Gender and Child Studies to provide workshops regarding safe migration. Furthermore, Sukarni has continually strived to improve her skills as a human rights defender by attending workshops such as the workshop on ‘Formulating the Indonesian Migrant Workers Strategic Agenda and Members of Their Family’ (2018) and the ‘Migrant Workers Jamboree’ (2015). Moreover, Sukarni recognises the power of media to reach people and cause positive change. Thus, Sukarni also designs online media such as blogs and information pages as a marketing tool. Due to Sukarni’s organisation receiving many complaints and cases regarding migrant worker issues, she hopes the DTP training can help her organisation resolve these issues and protect migrant worker rights. Specifically, she hopes to gain knowledge, writing, speaking advocacy skills to enhance her capabilities as human rights defender.
