On Saturday 15th June, 20 community leaders, together with 5 members of the Fairfield Multicultural Interagency Community Capacity Building working group gathered in Fairfield for an advocacy training workshop. The Working Group and DTP developed the workshop, with the advocacy skills sessions led by Sam Maresh. The focus was on how to effectively engage government and politicians. Through presentations, group discussion and a role play, participants shared knowledge and experience developed their skills in engagement strategies, and how to effectively communicate their objectives and community needs to government and build lasting relationships with government officials, political advisors, MPs and Ministers based on trust and credibility.
Participants included representatives from the Mandaean, Burmese, Chaldean, Chilean, African, Pakistani, Afghan, Assyrian, Vietnamese, Khmer, Iraqi, Syrian and Uyghur communities.
This workshop builds on DTP’s partnership with STARTTS for capacity building of diaspora refugee and migrant community leaders.
DTP acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we work, the Bedegal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their lands were never ceded, and we acknowledge their struggles for recognition and rights and pay our respects to the Elders – past, present – and the youth who are working towards a brighter tomorrow. This continent always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
