Anwar Maarif is the General Secretary of Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia. His responsibilities include but are not limited to: developing program networks at local, national and international stages, building networks with other institutions, developing strategies for programs and activities, and negotiating with networks related to organisational programs. Anwar understands the importance of change, at the SBMI they can have anywhere between 1 and 3 new cases reported each day of migrant workers violations and utilise the SBMI handing mechanism to facilitate settlement work, both through litigation and non-litigation approaches. Anwar is also part of the Migrant Workers Network within SBMI, providing knowledge and supporting them in policy development for government proposals addressing changes to legislation protecting migrant workers. By partaking in the DTP program Anwar hopes to develop diplomacy skills in both theory and practice, to then utilise these skills in his role at SBMI addressing the safety and exploitation of Migrant Workers from Indonesia.
