Philippines
Mr Sali-ot is 38 years of age and lives in Quezon, the Philippines. He holds a degree in Computer Engineering and has attended training on community participation in local governance, community resource management, radio production and human rights advocacy. NAKAMATA is a coalition of 10 indigenous peoples organisations in the Province of Bukidnon. Mr Sali-ot is a Community Organiser/ Advocacy Officer at NAKAMATA, and is currently working for the legal recognition of the traditional rights of Indigenous Peoples over their ancestral domains, which includes initiating advocacy and awareness building activities and assisting in the processing of documents which are evidence of communities ownership of their domains. Mr Sali-ot’s work has also involved the implementation of a Health and Literacy Program, surveys of community resource planning and land use planning, and community based resource management. He is also a member of the Task Force QUEMTRAS which supports the struggle of the Quezon Manobo Tribes Association to secure and recover their ancestral lands. Mr Sali-ot hopes that the training will provide him with additional knowledge to help sustain his community’s initiatives in the struggle for indigenous rights, and enable him and NAKAMATA to more effectively advocate for, defend and assert those rights.
