Augustine Hala

Secretary, Golob People’s Association (GPA)
Papua New Guinea
The Golob People’s Association believes in the equal participation of Indigenous communities in decision making, and in the protection of the environment, culture and natural resources. Augustine is the Secretary of the Organization, and cites himself as a Mine Awareness Campaigner, who runs programs for mine-affected communities in the Tolukuma mine area. Augustine is from the Fuyuge Indigenous community, which has been drastically affected by the Tolukuma mine operation since the early 1990’s. He liaises with tribal leaders, local CBO’s, national NGO’s and Oxfam Community Aid Abroad in order to fund campaigns to assist Fuguye communities in countering the impacts of mining in their local areas. Augustine believes the training provided by DTP will help him expand his limited knowledge of Indigenous rights, and will allow him to liaise more effectively with Fuyuge communities as well as other groups to exchange information and strategies. He believes that the training will teach him how to search for and identify organizations to assist with information and technology resources as well as with legal assistance in his campaigning.
