Cara is a legal officer working for the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) in Western Australia. KLC is an Aboriginal community organisation in remote North West Australia which has taken a national lead in pursuing legal cases, legislation and policies that recognise Indigenous self-determination and native title rights. Cara’s role includes providing legal advice to Indigenous communities in relation to determinations of native title claims, the protection of Aboriginal heritage sites and the negotiation of land use agreements. This work involves dealing with government agencies, commercial interest holders, industry peak bodies on a day-to-day basis. In the past, she has been involved in community liaison work with Indigenous communities in Canada and the US. In this capacity, she conducted desktop and field research into the impact of the mining industry on local Indigenous communities.
