United States
Mr Segall, a policy associate at the Center, focuses on the recruitment and migration of construction workers from South Asia to the Arabian Gulf. From 2012 to 2015, David directed the Human Rights in Iran Unit at The City University of New York, where he assisted the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran. From 2010 to 2012 he served as an Associate in the Middle East and North Africa Division of Human Rights Watch, where he conducted research on human rights issues in the Gulf region. Prior to this, he lived and worked in Jerusalem. David received an MA in Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University. The Center for Business and Human Rights, located at the NYU Stern School of Business, takes on the most pressing issues at the intersection of business and human rights. Global companies are central players in either improving or eroding respect for human rights. This is especially true when they operate in states with weak institutions and rule of law. In each aspect of the Center’s work, its focus is on how companies address human rights challenges in their core business operations. The Center starts from the premise that sector-specific approaches to improve human rights make companies more sustainable, predictable, and profitable over the long term. At the DTP Workshop, he looks forward to the opportunity, first and foremost, to learn from experienced stakeholders and advocates, many of whom are “on the ground”, and to share our initial findings on the recruitment process and related migrant challenges with other participantsHe views this workshop as an excellent opportunity to advance discussions with like-minded advocates and businesspeople on concrete, outcomes-based steps that stakeholders must now begin to take in order to shift the conversation from talk to action.
