Eko Waluyo

Program Coordinator, Indonesian Solidarity
Australia
Eko is currently the Director of Indonesia Solidarity (IS), a human rights group based in Sydney, Australia. Indonesia Solidarity seeks to bring attention in Australia to the human rights issues in Indonesia, particularly in trouble afflicted areas such as Aceh where thousands have been killed and human rights violations including torture, rape, and political killings have been widespread. This work involves liaising with NGO’s, politicians, academics, unions and the media to raise awareness and generate action. Eko was elected as the Director of an NGO in Surabaya, East Java in the 1990’s and has practical experience working with human rights workers in Indonesia with whom he is in daily contact. Through his wide network of contacts in Australia and Indonesia, Eko is able to act as a bridge between Indonesian civil society movements and their Australian counterparts. Eko believes the DTP training will be a forum through which he can develop a wider international network of support, and share experiences with participants from different countries. He is particularly interested in learning more about the Timorese experience and their path towards Independence.
