Elaine Glenn

Northern Land Council
Australia
Elaine works in the mining unit of the Northern Lands Council. She is based in the Jabiru regional office and provides advice to Traditional Owners regarding the Ranger, Jabiluka and Nabarlek mines. She is responsible for ensuring that the views of Traditional Owners are represented and acknowledged by the mining company, as well as by government bureaucrats. From 2001 – 2002 Elaine worked as an Australian volunteer in Cambodia with a local NGO called Ptea Teuk Dong. This organisation helped street families, particularly widows, to break the cycle of poverty by providing them with shelter, food, health care, education and vocational training for six months, and then assisting them to reintegrate into the community. It was this experience in Cambodia that made Elaine realise that she wanted to become a strong advocate for Indigenous people in Australia, as well as for other Indigenous groups globally. She aims to use the training to achieve this goal, alongside working with the Northern Lands Council and finishing her Masters in International and Community Development. Elaine wishes to become a stronger advocate for traditional owners and wants to learn how to hold governments accountable. She is particularly interested in the global context of Indigenous rights.
