Ian Aujare

Co-ordinator / Spokesperson, Zazao Environment Organisation
Solomon Islands
Mr Aujare is 30 years old and lives in Honiara, the Solomon Islands. He has been an intern as a Technical Secretariat for the International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Rainforests located in London. Mr Aujare’s is the Co-ordinator/spokesperson for the Zazao Environment Organisation which is a grassroots organisation formed to protect the land and forest resources and interests/rights of their indigenous owners and users in the face of commercial interest by foreign multi-nationals. His organisation also seeks to understand the international system and the external forces that have created this situation, and to pass on this understanding to the indigenous peoples of the Solomon Islands. Mr Aujare feels that there is a gap of knowledge and skills in his profession as and advocator for the rights of indigenous peoples, and believes that by participating in the training he will be able to narrow this gap and pass on the skills and knowledge learned to the members of his organisation which can then be disseminated though to the indigenous communities. He has a particular interest in the relationship between local, national and regional processes which can affect lives of local communities.
