Social Media Manager & Publicity Volunteer, Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics
Singapore
HOME is an organisation that aims to increase public awareness of migrant worker rights and the vulnerabilities that they face. This is achieved through campaigns, research and advocacy. Besides having multiple help desks for migrant workers who seek assistance, HOME also runs a shelter to provide refuge and socioemotional support for female domestic workers with ongoing cases. Odette has helped with several of HOME’s publicity campaigns – primarily launching and managing HOME’s Instagram presence for several years, as well as spearheading the “Humans of HOME” social media series, which seeks to provide multifaceted and intimate insight into the circumstances and issues that low-wage migrant workers in Singapore face. Odette has had to interview diverse caseworkers, shelter leaders, legal advisors and the many migrant worker volunteers integral to HOME. Odette has also supported HOME’s #EndForcedLabourSG campaign and Covid-19 response, with regards to the dormitory lockdown crisis. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Odette has been focusing on other vulnerable groups as well, including gig workers and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Odette is also concerned about the climate crisis and its implications on the most marginalised and precarious communities. As such, Odette firmly agrees with the DTP’s emphasis on building international networks of skill- and resource-sharing. Such mutual teaching and learning is deeply vital for building knowledge and fostering cross-border solidarity, especially as many human rights issues are intertwined with one another. Odette is particularly interested in video advocacy, storytelling and media skills that form part of the program.
