Karen Cheah

Policy Officer, The Fred Hollows Foundation – Indigenous Australia Program
Australia
Karen Chea’s role as a policy officer to the Fred Hollows Foundation – Indigenous Australia Program -encompasses a wide number of responsibilities that aim at achieving the goals of the organization. The Fred Hollows Foundation – Indigenous Australia Program is important to Australia’s human rights discussion as this organization contributes greatly to strengthen Australia’s health system by promoting Indigenous Australians’ right to good and proper health. Karen’s role as a policy officer is responsible for a number of different tasks such as research and analysis of government policies that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health and eye health, working on Government led initiatives (e.g. Close the Gap) to proote the state’s commitment to protecting Indigenous Australian’s rights. The DTP program will thus strengthen Karen’s position as a policy officer, as the DTP training provides comprehensive overviews of topics such as international human rights to indigenous communities around the world; all of which deepens Karen’s understanding on Indigenous Australian rights.
