Surya Bahadur Deuja

Regional Director, National Human Rights Commission
Nepal
By participating in the DTP training program, the training has allowed me to make significant contributions in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), People’s Global Action (PGA), as well as regional and national capacity building trainings.

Since joining the DTP training, my level of understanding and knowledge on human rights for migrant workers and advocacy for the rights of the migrant workers has been advanced.

Surya Bahadur Deuja is the Regional Director for the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (NHRC-Nepal), a constitutional human rights body in Nepal. NHRC-Nepal works with the government, civil society and human rights organisations in promoting and protecting human rights in Nepal. As a Regional Director of the Western Regional Office of the NHRC-Nepal, Surya has organised regional conferences on issues of Business and Human Rights in collaboration with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and other business and human rights organisations in Pokhara. He also monitors and investigates the issues of human rights during the internal conflict and post-conflict situation in Nepal.

By participating in the DTP training program, the training has allowed me to make significant contributions in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), People’s Global Action (PGA), as well as regional and national capacity building trainings.

Surya is an experienced advocate in developing capacity building programs for the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), civil society, and for human rights defenders in Liberia as a Transitional Justice Advisor and Lead Facilitator in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

Having participated in DTP’s Migrant Workers programs, Surya has since been involved in advocating for the rights of migrants, women’s rights, rights of Indigenous Peoples, mental health, rights of the senior citizen and the rights of persons with disabilities.

My activism work has contributed in hosting capacity building activities in Nepal in collaboration with the Nepali civil society organisations and it has allowed me to establish the Memorandum of Understanding between NHRC-Nepal and NHRC Qatar.

I also helped coordinate the International Conference on Cooperation between National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of the Migrant Workers held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 26-27 November 2012.
