At the beginning of 2024, DTP adopted and began to implement its new strategy for 2024-2027 that responds to a rapidly changing world and new challenges for human rights defenders and human rights movements. These challenges include increasing conflict and growing authoritarianism, the climate crisis and ecosystem collapse and AI, digitization and disinformation.
In 2024, working with alumni and partners, DTP delivered an impressive range of face-to-face and online programs. Its 14 programs held in 6 countries included 269 participants (about 50% women) from 23 countries. Distribution of DTP’s fortnightly eNewsletter climbed from over 6000 to over 7000.
Programs included partnership in development and delivery of the ASEAN Youth Human Rights Advocacy Academy in Indonesia, a workshop with Indonesian alumni to establish an Indonesian DTP alumni network, and a regional meeting with DTP Asia alumni to establish a regional alumni network focused on Business and Human Rights.
A highlight of the year was bringing 16 leaders of Myanmar’s democracy movements to Australia for a special intensive 3 week program to assist them in their work to build a new inclusive and democratic Myanmar.
The stories of DTP alumni featured in its fortnightly Newsletter and on its website are powerful testament to DTP’s transformative impact.
DTP acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we work, the Bedegal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their lands were never ceded, and we acknowledge their struggles for recognition and rights and pay our respects to the Elders – past, present – and the youth who are working towards a brighter tomorrow. This continent always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
