“[The DTP] training program is a new learning opportunity, and with that comes a responsibility: the responsibility to do all we can with our new knowledge and our new networks to serve people denied these same opportunities. We must never stop growing and improving, we must never stop fighting for justice and defending human rights.”
HE Aung Myo Min, Human Rights Minister of the National Unity Government of Myanmar opened DTP’s 31st Annual Human Rights and Peoples’ Diplomacy training program in Dili, Timor-Leste, yesterday, 21 August, 2023.
The program, held at the invitation of DTP’s Founder and Patron, President José Ramos-Horta has brought together 24 human rights defenders from 10 countries in Asia and the Pacific. The program builds knowledge and skills and solidarity networks.
“The people and leaders of Timor-Leste know the meaning of sacrifice and struggle. They lived through the darkness of oppression and colonialism, and they gave everything in their fight for freedom and self-determination. Now a free and vibrant democracy, Timor-Leste is a fitting host for a human rights defenders training,” Aung Myo Min said.
The program is highlighting the human rights crisis in Myanmar and the need for solidarity with its people and democratic government. It is held in partnership with The Judicial System Monitoring Program (JSMP) and the UNTL Human Rights Centre.
The program also provides participants to reflect on the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. “For the better part of a century, the Declaration has recognised the inherent dignity, equality, worth and rights of all people,” remarked Aung Myo Min, “Our region needs a strong generation of human rights defenders. This is your time, and this course will add to your strengths and skills”.
The Diplomacy Training Program's 31st Annual Human Rights and People's Diplomacy capacity building program receives support from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
The 31st Annual Program runs until the 1 September. To read HE Aung Myo Min’s full keynote address, click here.
DTP acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we work, the Bedegal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their lands were never ceded, and we acknowledge their struggles for recognition and rights and pay our respects to the Elders – past, present – and the youth who are working towards a brighter tomorrow. This continent always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
