Western Sydney Migrant Community Leaders gather for human rights advocacy training

On Saturday 15th June, 20 community leaders, together with 5 members of the Fairfield Multicultural Interagency Community Capacity Building working group gathered in Fairfield for an advocacy training workshop. The Working Group and DTP developed the workshop, with the advocacy skills sessions led by Sam Maresh. The focus was on how to effectively engage government and politicians. Through presentations, group discussion and a role play, participants shared knowledge and experience developed their skills in engagement strategies, and how to effectively communicate their objectives and community needs to government and build lasting relationships with government officials, political advisors, MPs and Ministers based on trust and credibility.

Participants included representatives from the Mandaean, Burmese, Chaldean, Chilean, African, Pakistani, Afghan, Assyrian, Vietnamese, Khmer, Iraqi, Syrian and Uyghur communities.

This workshop builds on DTP’s partnership with STARTTS for capacity building of diaspora refugee and migrant community leaders.
