Since 2022, DTP and the Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) have been working in partnership on capacity-building initiatives with refugee and migrant community leaders in NSW. These leaders asked DTP and STARTTS to run a series of webinars to build knowledge and understanding of various human rights instruments and processes.
This series of three webinars focuses on three UN human rights accountability mechanisms and how communities and advocates can engage with them.
The UN Treaty Bodies are committees of independent experts. They monitor how governments implement the human rights treaties they have ratified, drawing on government reports, National Human Rights Institutions and civil society “shadow” reports. The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a process in which UN Member States review each other’s human rights records, and civil society can influence the recommendations made. The Special Procedures, including the Special Rapporteurs, act on individual cases and broader concerns, undertake country visits and thematic studies, and raise public awareness.
