Since 2022, DTP and the Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) have been working in partnership on capacity-building initiatives with refugee and migrant community leaders in NSW. These leaders asked DTP and STARTTS to run a series of webinars to build knowledge and understanding of various human rights instruments and processes.
This webinar series focuses on the Magnitsky Acts and Australia.
Magnitsky Acts have been passed in the USA, Europe, Canada and Australia, among others. They allow targeted sanctions against individuals and corporations responsible for serious human rights violations and corruption, even when these acts take place in other jurisdictions. For human rights advocates, they offer new tools to end impunity, deter violators, offer a sense of justice to victims and their families, and support campaigns for accountability.
This series introduced the origins and key provisions of the Magnitsky Acts, including Australia’s Magnitsky-style sanctions laws. It also examined cases where these laws have been used against people implicated in human rights abuses and corruption, with a focus on Asia.
