Ajay is the Managing Trustee of the Society for Rural and Urban Joint Activities based in Maharashtra, India. He has considerable experience in issues relevant to human rights and business. Ajay’s primary responsibilities include advocacy lobbying for pro-people policy changes, engaging trade unions, state machinery and business houses for advocating peoples concern, identifying exploitative nodes by adopting participatory commodity chain analysis, and organising people-led business enterprise by organising them into producer companies. At the national level, Ajay is involved with the National Committee on Peoples’ Rights over Natural Resources which works for pro-people legislative changes such as the Indian Forest Act 1927, Wildlife Act 1972, and Biological Diversity Act 2002. Ajay also plays an active role in the National Committee on Review of Forest Acts 2006 and has brought the concerns of the Primitive Tribal Groups to the National Advisory Committee formed by the government. He hopes to use human rights standards and mechanisms in addressing the issues faced by people at the community level and to learn from the experiences of other participants.
