Anne Yacob

Program Director, North South Initiative (NSI)
Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand
Anne works as program director at the NSI, a social justice orientated NGO in Malaysia. Anne is responsible for all of NSI’s projects, directly involving grassroots communities, including migrant workers, refugees, smallholder farmers, Patani (South Thailand), West Papua and Indigenous youths. Anne organizes training programs for migrant communities covering empowerment, advocacy and policies, evidence and data collecting skills. As an associate of Pax Romana, Anne has also ensured thousands of youths in Asia received human rights training. Without evidence, it is impossible to fight for justice. NSI has signed MOUs with various universities to ensure critical quality and impact of their work. Anne hopes this program will enable her to gain practical lobbying skills as a human rights defender. She also hopes to learn how to mitigate risks that come with the lobby and exposure of truth and evidence. NSI’s work can be very high risk. The coordinators come face to face with all kinds of abusive actors like military, police, intelligence, agents, employers and sub-agents. Learning from other HRDs will improve Anne’s confidence to take advocacy and protection to the next level.
