Jack Kolts trained as a policeman with the PNG Royal Constabulary and served the force for 7 years before taking up employment with the Pogera Gold Mine as a Security Supervisor. In 1995 he returned to his local community as a policeman assisting with the law and order problems in the community. From 1997-2002 he was elected as a Ward Councillor to the Local Level Government. In his role as Ward Councillor he: mediates disputes between tribes, individuals and families; makes decisions on issues affecting the community members; protects and promotes human rights; set up the Village Peace/Development Committees to address issues affecting the community such as youth drug abuse and truancy; set up the Peace Committee to address gender discrimination in general and domestic violence and polygamy issues in particular. Jack wishes to undertake the DTP training in order to further increase his knowledge of women’s rights and human rights. He believes that as a male promoter of women as equal partners he will have a significant impact on the position of women within his community and wishes to expand his ability to do this with the training.
