On Monday 13th May, 10 DTP alumni attended the first meeting of DTP's Malaysia alumni, hosted by Sumitha Kishna at the offices of "Our Journey" in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting was organised at short notice, following DTP's most recent program in Sabah, Malaysia on Indigenous Peoples Rights. The meeting was called to bring alumni together, and to explore the establishment of a DTP Malaysia alumni network. DTP was represented by its Executive Director, Patrick Earle and DTP Training Committee member, Matthew Coghlan. Apologies were received from other alumni who could not attend for various reasons.
The meeting began with introductions and a sharing, of what DTP program alumni had been part of, what they are doing now and reflections on the training. There was agreement that:
There was also discussion of the value of inviting DTP to follow-up, 2nd level trainings and Sudhagaran Stanley (C4) and Patrick shared plans for a pilot program in Malaysia in December on "Human Rights and Corruption", which would have a focus on bringing together some interested DTP alumni from across Asia.
DTP has over 100 alumni in Malaysia and it was good to see some separately in Sabah. Some alumni who could not attend this meeting sent in apologies and expressions of support for the establishment of a DTP Malaysia alumni network, and DTP will work with alumni to action the suggestions made.
The meeting was followed by a delicious dinner and more informal sharing at a nearby restaurant.
DTP acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we work, the Bedegal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their lands were never ceded, and we acknowledge their struggles for recognition and rights and pay our respects to the Elders – past, present – and the youth who are working towards a brighter tomorrow. This continent always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
