Godwin Aiawa

Senior Lawyer, Centre for Environmental Law and Community Rights (CELCOR)
Papua New Guinea
Godwin is the Senior Lawyer at CELCOR, an NGO which promotes the sustainable use of natural resources, and the protection of the traditional rights of Indigenous people through both litigation and advocacy. CELCOR also seeks to influence the development of suitable and appropriate legislation and policy for the protection of the environment and of Indigenous Peoples in Papua New Guinea. Godwin is directly involved in conducting environmental litigation through the courts and travels extensively into rural communities in Papua New Guinea to meet with and represent his clients. He also provides training and awareness sessions for local and rural communities. Godwin worked for various NGO’s after completing his Bachelor of Laws, and began his current work with CELCOR in 2001. He deals daily with reports of abuse and breaches of fundamental human rights committed by both police and logging companies in their desire to exploit the environment for profit. He wishes to use the DTP training to respond more effectively to environmental and human rights issues such as these.
