UDHR @ 75: eNews Series

Throughout 2023, DTP’s eNews featured a series of contributions marking the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action. The series brought together statements, speeches, opinion pieces and resources from UN leaders, human rights experts and friends of DTP.

All contributions to the series are collected below, with the most recent first.

We are concluding our series of contributions on the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In this issue we publish a contribution by Karen Gomez-Dumpit, friend of DTP, former Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines, and campaigner against the death penalty since 1993. She outlines the current state of the death penalty around the world and holds up the successful campaign against its re-introduction in the Philippines as a model for the anti-death penalty struggle.

We are continuing with a series of contributions on the anniversaries of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In this issue we publish a contribution by DTP Advisory Board member Justice The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG. Justice Kirby has served in various UN roles and has been an effective human rights advocate throughout his life. In this piece, “Three Heroes of the UDHR @75” he reflects on the foundational role of Eleanor Roosevelt, John Humphrey, and H.V Evatt in the adoption of the Declaration.

In this issue we link to a speech by Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, “75 years on: The Pathway to Solutions through Human Rights”. In it the High Commissioner argues that in these times of crisis human rights are the ultimate tool of prevention.

We are continuing with a series of contributions on the anniversaries of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (75th) and the Vienna Declaration (30th). In this issue we link to a statement from 72 UN member governments on the right to education, recalling the words in the Vienna Declaration “education on human rights and the dissemination of proper information, both theoretical and practical, play an important role in the promotion and respect of human rights with regard to all individuals without distinction of any kind.”

We are continuing with a series of contributions on the anniversaries of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Vienna Declaration. In this issue we provide a link to an article by Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. In it he argues that “… the potential of human rights to challenge the devastating rise of economic inequality has not been fully realized – yet. If human rights are to remain relevant for a further 75 years, activists should make it a priority to better understand and untap this potential.”

In this issue we link to an article, Human rights are key to ensuring no one is left behind that focuses on the right to social security and the right to development both of which are a feature of the UDHR. Starting with a quote from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, “Current economic systems are simply unjust, discriminatory and not sustainable”, the article concludes that the SDGs need to be firmly anchored in human rights and that human rights are the critical levers to accelerate progress.

In this issue we link to an article by Sydney academic, Tim Anderson, called The Political Economy of Human Rights. In it he highlights the important distinctions between formal (human and legal) rights and effective (individual and social) rights and argues that in Asia the social character of rights has been a feature of debates around rights since the 1993 Bangkok NGO Declaration.

In this issue we link to an article by Eva Wuchold, the Programme Director Social Rights of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung “As important as ever: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights” in which she touches on the tension between the “universal” and “inalienable” nature of the rights of all human beings, while the modern institution of the state is based on the principle of national and territorial sovereignty.

In this issue we reproduce a think piece by John Pace, “The Evolution of the International Architecture for the Protection of Human Rights since Vienna”. His purpose “is to underline the ever-widening gap between rhetoric in the meeting room and reality on the ground, which Vienna attempted to address”. John was the Secretary of the Conference, and was until recently on the Board of DTP.

In this issue we publish a resolution adopted at the UN Human Rights Council at its 52nd Session commemorating the anniversaries of the UDHR and the VDPA, urging States to redouble their efforts in fulfilling their duty to promote and protect all human rights and fundamental freedoms, and requesting the High Commissioner to hold a high-level event in December in commemoration of the anniversaries.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, affirming the importance of human rights to peace, security, development and a just international order. Over the year we will feature important contributions to human rights debates. This issue we include a link to the UN Secretary-General speech to the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council in which he stresses the contribution of civil society on the protection of human rights and the danger of complacency.

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Bangkok NGO Declaration of Human Rights. We share a link to the new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk’s opening address to the UN Human Rights Council (with links to UDHR 75th Anniversary Campaign). In it he states that to avoid a retrograde step in human rights, it is critical that we rekindle the spirit, the impulse and the vitality that led to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75 years ago.
