Volunteer Caseworker, Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics
Singapore
HOME (Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics) is dedicated to supporting and empowering migrant workers who experience abuse and exploitation. Belle’s casework role involves closely interacting with foreign domestic workers (FDWs) who approach HOME’s women’s shelter for assistance, taking their cases with sensitivity and compassion, referring those who require it to counsellors, advising people of their rights and breaking down possible courses of action for them depending on their requests for transfer or repatriation. This involves actively communicating with various parties such as employers, employment agencies, government officials, and police investigative officers. Belle would like to channel her skills towards strategically effecting more systemic change on a macroscopic level, and gain a larger picture of human rights issues across boundaries and linking up the myriad of related global challenges that affect us all. Belle hopes that this program will assist her in becoming a more effective advocate for migrant voices in the future and is committed to share her learnings with her fellow casework volunteer team.
