Akmal Ali

Pacific Islands Association of Non-governmental Organisations (PIANGO)
Fiji
Akmal is working in the strategic programming areas of PIANGO and advocating and doing general liaison on behalf of PIANGO. He coordinates Pacific student activities, conducts workshops and facilitates policy dialogue on NGO Bills. In this regard, he has led the piloting of a code of minimum standards for CSOs in Fiji, Kiribati, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Guam, Samoa, Marshall Islands and continues to liaise with Pacific Students’ network comprising umbrella student bodies from around the Pacific Islands region. In 2016, when Tropical Cyclone Winston hit Fiji, he was deployed to the Fiji Council of Social Services for 6 weeks to reactivate and coordinate the NGO Disaster Coordination Centre (NDCC). The current cases he is working to resolve which involve human rights harm caused by private sector activities/project including deep sea mining, sea/river bed mining and Freeport mining in West Papua. Akmal would like this program to help in capacity strengthening of Pacific CSOs on human rights.
