Alexander Garay

Australia
Alexander’s experience working with the ILBIJERRI Theatre Company has taught him that there is a huge gap and under representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in art and theatre, particularly as it gives voice to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the medium of theatre. Alexander assisted in the staging of a play called Beautiful One Day which was a theatre production that told the story of Palm Island through the voices of the Palm Island people. Alex is concerned about the under representation and discrimination of LGBTI (Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) people. Alex is of the opinion that the LGBTI people are often left out on issues concerning equality of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Alex is also concerned about the alarming suicide rates amongst the LGBTI people within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Alex believes that more knowledge and information needs to be disseminated amongst the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People on LGBTI issues. Alexander wants to learn about more effective ways to communicate with the government and people in power, the workings of the United Nations and tools to cultivate ideas on new ways of advocating for rights and skills to develop specific projects and implement them.
