Cynthia Nakozoete

Choiseul Conservation Practitioner, The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
Solomon Islands
Cynthia coordinates TNC’s conservation and environmental program in Choiseul Province, Western Solomons. She worked with a charitable organization (Lauru Land of Tribal Community) to protect the environment and promote sustainable development and with communities to organize community consultation, awareness and to assist in the establishment of Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA)/ continue monitoring (technical support) of existing LMMA. She also worked with Choiseul Provincial Council of Woman (CPCW), a local NGO working with women in promoting gender equality and womens participation, and on a grant to carry out mining awareness in wards around Choiseul Province. This activity provides avenue for women to voice their concern with regards to what is mining and its impact to the environment and people. Apart from all the above, she also works with partners (provincial government & NGO) and other stakeholders to build stronger networking to promote conservation and management of natural resources in the province. From this course, Cynthia would like to acquire more knowledge, skills and capacity in human rights, particularly when it relates to business and decision making and when human rights violations occur, so that she can implement this learning in all activities undertaken in her work in Choiseul (ex: training or awareness talk in the communities; advice and guidance whenever human right violation occur) as well as with the CPCW in their coming mining awareness refresher training.
