Gilbertson Tom Wilson

Gilbertson is the General Secretary at CLEARCD, an organisation that promotes and protects human rights for the underprivileged and marginalized people. At CLEARCD, Gilbertson creates awareness on migrant worker issues such as exploitation by recruiting agencies and trafficking. Gilbertson is a lawyer and has worked on various social issues related to labour rights, prisoners’ rights and human rights violations caused by law enforcement agencies. He assists Indian workers in foreign countries by taking their issues before the Indian embassy and Ministry of Foreign (or External) Affairs and the courts in India. Gilbertson believes that the DTP training will broaden his knowledge on how to apply various international mechanisms to protect human rights. He would like to learn the experiences and good practices from trainers and other participants. , Gilbertson is the General Secretary of CLEARCD in India. He is also a Social Worker, Software Engineer and a Lawyer. As a lawyer, he has worked on various social issues related with labour rights, prisoners’ rights, and human rights violations caused by law enforcement agencies. He also assists Indian workers working in foreign countries by taking the issue before the Indian embassy and Ministry of Foreign (or External) Affairs. From the DTP course, Gilbertson would like to gain a better understanding of the international legal mechanisms available. He sees a potential in increasing legal awareness programs for migrant workers, as currently the biggest challenges include the difficulty in finding pro bono lawyers, and translating of documents in Arabic for migrant workers working in the Gulf region.
