Pacific CSO representatives and experts from the region gather for a consultation workshop on Climate Change, Human Rights and Business in the Pacific

From 25-27 June, DTP facilitated a consultation workshop in Suva, Fiji on Climate Change, Human Rights and Business in the Pacific. The consultation brought together 17 CSO representatives and experts from the region, including seven DTP alumni. It was organised in partnership with the Pacific Islands Association of NGOs (PIANGO), Citizens’ Constitutional Forum (CCF) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office of the Pacific (OHCHR-ROP).

The workshop objective was to inform DTP’s future capacity building strategy on human rights and climate change in the Pacific.

Sessions explored the intersection between human rights, climate change and business, and how to use global commitments on human rights and climate change in advocacy. Participants shared examples of project work, their current capacity building programs and identified gaps and needs and looked at opportunities for collaboration and networking. There was a focus on how to better link those working on human rights issues of gender, disability, and migration with those working for action on climate. There was discussion of how human rights can be integrated to work on loss and damage and climate financing. Session were led by DTP trainers UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development Professor Surya Deva and Joshua Cooper, Hawai’i Institute for Human Rights.

Surya shared his work in developing a new planet-focussed model of participatory development, which incorporates the responsibilities of governments and business. Presentations from participants grounded and informed the program. A highlight was the presentation from Banaban Human Rights Defenders Network..

The consultation will feed into the development of a three-year human rights, climate change and business strategy in the Pacific. DTP would like to acknowledge the support from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) for this consultation.
