Coordinator, Anti Trafficking Unit, Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC)
India
Amit Kumar Amit is a Coordinator in the Anti Trafficking Unit of the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC). DMSC organises regular advocacy programs with policymakers and law enforcement agencies about the rights of sex workers, domestic workers and other migrant workers. DMSC also undertakes advocacy aimed directly at the community level on the basis that the community as a whole must be part of the policy-making and policy reform process. Amit’s current work is based on the prevention and awareness of the trafficking of sex workers. In particular, DMSC works with the Self-Regulatory Board (SRB) which assesses all entrants to the profession based on the ‘By sex workers, for sex workers’ model. The DMSC-SRB initiative has helped to provide economic independence for sex workers by enabling them to safely deposit their money, to get a loan for their children’s education and to obtain other social and economic benefits, and to ensure the safe return of those found to have been victims of trafficking.
